What is the difference between the book and the web-based The GT4 Programmer's Tutorial?
Sunday, 01 January 2006

From the book's preface:

This book is the evolution of a programming tutorial which has been freely available on the web since 2003 (back when the "bleeding edge" was GT3): http://gdp.globus.org/gt4-tutorial/. In fact, some portions of the book are directly based on material contained in the tutorial. But, what exactly sets the book apart from the tutorial? Allow us to elaborate...

  • More content: The main difference is that the book is just plain and simply bigger than the tutorial! The tutorial is meant as a no-frills, quick introduction to GT4 programming, which leaves little room to explain certain concepts in detail. In the book, most of the chapters taken from the tutorial are greatly expanded. And, of course, the book includes quite a few chapters which are not included in the tutorial.

  • Reviewed, copyedited, proofread: The tutorial does not undergo any formal review process. The book, on the other hand, has been reviewed by GT4 experts which provided invaluable suggestions on how to make the text as accurate and concise as possible.

  • It's a book! Don't try to deny it... the soft touch of paper running through your fingers will always beat having to read from a computer screen for several hours.

The book, however, does not replace the tutorial, which will continue to be freely available on the web. Along with the book, it will be maintained and updated to track changes in the Globus Toolkit.
